Ray Tomlinson

American computer programmer (1941-2016)

Raymond Samuel Tomlinson (April 23, 1941[1] – March 5, 2016) was an American programmer. He created the first email system on the ARPANET system in 1971. He used the @ sign to separate the user from their machine, which has been used in email addresses ever since.[2] He was added into the Internet Hall of Fame. He was born in Amsterdam, New York.

Tomlinson died of a heart attack in Lincoln, Massachusetts.[3] He was aged 74.[3]
