Shahabuddin Ahmed

President of Bangladesh

Shahabuddin Ahmed (1 February 1930 – 19 March 2022) was a Bangladeshi politician. He was the 12th President of Bangladesh two times from 1990 until 1991 and from 1996 until 2001. He also served as the Chief Justice of the country from 1990 until 1995.

Ahmed took over the office of President after a popular uprising against President Hussain Muhammad Ershad in 1991.[1] Afterwards, he returned to his duties as the Chief Justice following the amendment. Later, he served as the President from 1996 to 2001. During his first time in the Presidential office, he served as Acting President. Later when he again took over the office in 1996 he became the 12th President.[2]

In February 2022, Ahmed was hospitalized in Dhaka, Bangladesh for an old age-related illness.[3] He died on 19 March 2022 at the age of 92.[4]
