Shanghai Jiao Tong University (Chinese: 上海交通大學 / 上海交通大学, Pinyin Shànghǎi Jiāotōng Dàxué) , sometimes called Shanghai Transport University is a public university in Shanghai, China. It was founded in 1896. It is a founding member of the C9 League, which groups a number of public universities in China. When it was founded in 1896, it was called Nanyang Public School (南洋公學; Nányáng Gōngxué). It has gone through a number of transformations, and has its current name since 1959. The university has over 40,000 students, and about 2,700 international students.
Jiaotong translates as 'traffic', perhaps 'connection'. The word can be found in many university names, and is often unttanslated. Today, ther university is known for making the Academic Ranking of World Universities, which is also known as Shanghai rating.
