Shuntarō Tanikawa
Japanese poet
Shuntarō Tanikawa (谷川 俊太郎, Tanikawa Shuntarō, December 15, 1931 – November 13, 2024) was a Japanese poet and translator.[1] He was thought to be one of the most widely read Japanese poets.[2] Tanikawa was born in Suginami, Japan.
The English translation of his poetry volume Floating the River in Melancholy won the American Book Award in 1989. Tanikawa has written more than 60 books of poetry and also translated Charles Schulz's Peanuts and the Mother Goose rhymes into Japanese. He was nominated for the 2008 Hans Christian Andersen Award.
Tanikawa died in Tokyo, Japan on November 13, 2024, at the age of 92.[3][4]
