city and capital of Sumy Oblast in north-eastern Ukraine

Sumy (Ukrainian: Суми) is a city in Ukraine. It is the administrative centre of Sumy Oblast. In 2020, 264,981 people lived there. Most of population has got Ukrainian origin.

The city of Sumy was founded in the 1650s by the Cossacks within the region of Sloboda Ukraine. On the banks of Psel River, the city is also at the intersection of several other major transportation routes for the oblast and north-eastern Ukraine. Notable infrastructure includes Sumy Airport and railway junction for the Southern Railways at Sumy railway station.
