The decade long definition here has been unnecessarily complicated. At the simplest level, hypertrophy is merely the increase in the size of something. It was contrasted to hyperplasia which is also the increase in the extent of something, the difference being the nature of the mechanism causing the increase. The emphasis on volume and quick jump to another technical term/process muddled the simple original concept. It was good to contrast them, but a simpler definition should have come first, after all this is Simple English Wikipedia.
