This template is used for referencing road maps published by the Michigan Department of Transportation or its predecessor agencies. This template will fill out the appropriate details for each map in its listing.

This template is based on {{Cite map}} so it falls into the Citation Style 1 (CS1) series of templates, although it can be set to emulate CS2 style.

Usage change

{{cite MDOT map |date = |section = |sections = |inset = |link = |c-link = }}

Parameters change

  • Either of the following parameters is required, or the citation will display an error.
    • date: the date of the map, in ISO format , for maps with multiple editions per year. For the maps with separate sheets for the Upper vs. Lower Peninsula, add a "U" or an "L" as appropriate to the end of the date.
    • year: the year of the map if only one is published per year (1958–present). For the Truck Operator's Map for given year (currently 1990–present), add a "T" to the year.
  • link: to link the department name as author
  • c-link: to link the cartographer where it appears as the second author in years where H.M. Gousha (1930–1931, 1969) or Rand McNally (1932–1943) did the cartography work for the state.
  • section: to indicate the map section. Output is preceded by "§", the standard abbreviation for "section".
    • sections: to indicate the map sections, if plural. Output is preceded by "§§", the standard abbreviation for "sections".
  • inset: to indicate the map inset. Output is followed by "inset".
    • For maps from 1968 and later, use |inset=Detroit and the template will fill in the appropriate scale and name for the Detroit inset; otherwise the template will use the scale for the other city insets as appropriate.
  • at: a free-form location, useful for citing the map legend or the full map as well as complicated combinations of insets and map sections. Please observe the standard output formats above for consistency.
  • access-date: to set the date the map was accessed from an online source; defaults to a known date when the URL was added to this template.
  • mode: set to "cs2" to use Citation Style 2 output
  • author-mask: to optionally render the author as a set of dashes when using multiple sources in the same bibliographic list; set equal to the number of dashes to display (normally 3)
  • ref: for Harvard-style referencing, if necessary
    • letter: a letter to append to a date or year for Harvard-style referencing, if necessary

Note: If any of section, sections, inset, or at is not set for maps published in 1931 or later, the template will categorize the article in Category:Cite MDOT map tracking category. Starting in that year, the state included the section grid along the sides of the map, and a citation to those maps lacking an in-source location of some kind, either the grid section(s) or an inset, is assumed to be incomplete. The exception is an article using Harvard-style referencing where ref is set for a full map citation in a "Works cited" or similar section below the footnotes; the template will not categorize those usages.
