This is a template to generate links to the Paleobiology Database. It has been updated to allow linking to different record types, having initially been designed to link only to taxon pages.

N.B.: links created using the original format (two parameters, without a search term defined as parameter 1) will still link to a taxon page.

Usage change

The template takes three or four parameters:

  • the search term (if not defined, the template will link to a taxon page)
  • the code number or formation (required, found in the URL depending on which search term is selected - see below)
  • the group formation number (if the formation search term is used)
  • the link text for display by the template

Search term change

The following search terms can be used as parameter 1, corresponding to the terms given in the Full Search drop-down menu on the Paleobiology Database website:

Collection change

To link to a collection page, use the following format:

{{Paleodb|collection|code#|Text}}

The code number for parameter 2 is found at the end of the URL; for example:

http://paleodb.org/cgi-bin/bridge.pl?a=basicCollectionSearch&collection_no=58899

The link text is usually the name of the collection being linked; if left blank the template will display Collection.

For example:

Template Produces
{{Paleodb|collection|58899}} Collection in the Paleobiology Database
{{Paleodb|collection|58899|Schooner Gulch (Miocene of the United States)}} Schooner Gulch (Miocene of the United States) in the Paleobiology Database

Taxon change

i.e. {{Paleodb|taxon|taxon#|Text}}

The taxon number for parameter 2 can be found at the end of the URL; for example:

http://paleodb.org/cgi-bin/bridge.pl?a=checkTaxonInfo&taxon_no=28856

The link text is usually the name of the organism being linked to; if left blank the template will use the page name.

For example:

Template Produces
{{Paleodb|taxon|28856}} Paleodb/doc in the Paleobiology Database
{{Paleodb|taxon|28856|Rhychonella}} Rhynchonella in the Paleobiology Database

Picture change

To link to a picture page, use the following format:

{{Paleodb|picture|code#|Text}}

The code number for parameter 2 is found at the end of the URL; for example:

http://paleodb.org/cgi-bin/bridge.pl?a=displayImage&image_no=1020

The link text is usually the name of the picture being linked to; if left blank the template will display Picture.

For example:

Template Produces
{{Paleodb|picture|1020}} Picture in the Paleobiology Database
{{Paleodb|picture|1020|Triassopsychops superba}} Triassopsychops superba in the Paleobiology Database

Reference change

To link to a reference page, use the following format:

{{Paleodb|reference|code#|Text}}

The code number for parameter 2 is found at the end of the URL; for example:

http://paleodb.org/cgi-bin/bridge.pl?a=displayReference&reference_no=16702

The link text is usually the title of the reference being linked to; if left blank the template will display Reference.

For example:

Template Produces
{{Paleodb|reference|16702}} Reference in the Paleobiology Database
{{Paleodb|reference|16702|J.M. Clark 1991}} J.M. Clark 1991 in the Paleobiology Database

Formation change

To link to a stratigraphic unit (formation) page, use the following format:

{{Paleodb|formation|formation||group formation member|Text}}

The code number for parameters 2 and 3 are found in the URL; for example:

http://paleodb.org/cgi-bin/bridge.pl?action=displayStrata&geological_group=&formation=%28%3F%29%20%22Couches%20%E0%20Poissons%20et%20Ammonites%22&group_formation_member=%28%3F%29%20%22Couches%20%E0%20Poissons%20et%20Ammonites%22

The link text is usually the name of the formation being linked to; if left blank the template will display Formation.

For example:

Template Produces
{{paleodb|formation|%28%3F%29%20%22Couches%20%E0%20Poissons%20et%20Ammonites%22|%28%3F%29%20%22Couches%20%E0%20Poissons%20et%20Ammonites%22}} Formation in the Paleobiology Database
{{paleodb|formation|%28%3F%29%20%22Couches%20%E0%20Poissons%20et%20Ammonites%22|%28%3F%29%20%22Couches%20%E0%20Poissons%20et%20Ammonites%22|"Couches à Poissons et Ammonites" Formation}} "Couches à Poissons et Ammonites" Formation in the Paleobiology Database

Time scale change

To link to a time scale page, use the following format:

{{Paleodb|timescale|code#|Text}}

The code number for parameter 2 is found at the end of the URL; for example:

http://paleodb.org/cgi-bin/bridge.pl?a=processViewScale&scale_no=136

The link text is usually the title of the time scale being linked to; if left blank the template will display Time scale.

For example:

Template Produces
{{Paleodb|timescale|136}} Time scale in the Paleobiology Database
{{Paleodb|timescale|136|Becker et al. Emsian Substages}} Becker et al. Emsian Substages in the Paleobiology Database

Time interval change

To link to a time scale page, use the following format:

{{Paleodb|timeinterval|code#|Text}}

The code number for parameter 2 is found at the end of the URL; for example:

http://paleodb.org/cgi-bin/bridge.pl?a=displayInterval&interval_no=32

The link text is usually the title of the time interval being linked to; if left blank the template will display Time interval.

For example:

Template Produces
{{Paleodb|timeinterval|32}} Time interval in the Paleobiology Database
{{Paleodb|timeinterval|32|Holocene epoch}} Holocene epoch in the Paleobiology Database
