Purpose change
The sfhof template message is used to inform readers that there is a short biography of someone in the online Science Fiction Hall of Fame. Equivalently, the SFHOF has inducted the person; s/he is "in the Hall of Fame". The template also provides convenient links to the official biography (an external link) and to the Wikipedia article that best covers the SF Hall of Fame.
Usage change
The template will commonly be used in the Wikipedia entry for a Science Fiction Hall of Fame member, perhaps in section "External links". It may be used anywhere in Wikipedia, however.
Template 'sfhof' uses values of two parameters, id and name. For example:

Required parameter id identifies the desired Hall of Fame biography and is necessary for the external link; there is no default HOF biography. When optional parameter name is assigned, the template displays a name different from the title of the article where it is used, which is the default value.

Use the template with id=1483 (for Roger Zelazny) and name=Roger Zelazny anywhere in Wikipedia. For example, in the article Nine Princes in Amber, about the book by Roger Zelazny whose thumbnail image is in his SFHOF biography:

Assignment of a name (linkname) is optional but practically necessary when the template is used outside the person's Wikipedia entry. Again in the article Nine Princes in Amber:

Anywhere the template is used, the parameter values may be given alone, without equations, if the id value is given before the name value. Again in the article Roger Zelazny:

Determine the id value change
The URL for any SFHOF biography currently ends with a numerical id such as 1483 for Roger Zelazny:
In order to ascertain whether someone is a SFHOF member and, if so, to find what id value to assign here,
- Visit the Science Fiction Hall of Fame top page at EMP online and skim the alphabetical list of members in the right margin. The list is linked to the biographies.
While visiting any SFHOF biography, the web browser should display the URL with the appropriate id number at the end.
It may be adequate to "Google Search" the biography by adapting this search string.

Determine the name value change
The template may be used anywhere at Wikipedia. Because it will frequently be used in biographies of Hall of Fame members, by default it displays (as a linkname) the title of the article where it is used, such as "Roger Zelazny".
It may be useful to assign name in the SFHOF member's Wikipedia entry:
- to display "Roger Zelazny 1937–1995" (the actual title of the official biography) rather than "Roger Zelazny"
- to display "Roger Zelazny" rather than "Roger Zelazny (writer)" (if and when the Wikipedia entry is disambiguated that way).
