The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth

2014 roguelike video game

The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth is a roguelike video game where you play as a small boy named Isaac[1]. It is based off the religious tale of the same name.

The Binding of Isaac takes place in an unknown time period. Isaac lives with his mom, who is strongly Christian. One day, she hears a voice, which she assumes is God, and the voice tells her to trap Isaac in his room and take away all his clothing and toys.

When she does this, the voice then tells her to kill Isaac, and she grabs a knife to do the task. Isaac sees his mother with her knife, and escapes through a trap door under the carpet in his room. He is thrown into the basement, where he defeats monsters and traverses deeper into the basement.

Gameplay

After the opening cutscene, you can control Isaac's movement from a top-down view, where you can shoot your tears as bullets to defeat enemies. You collect coins, keys, bombs, and other objects to help you. Each time you start a new run, the layout of the rooms and the pickups are entirely randomly generated.

There are items for you to collect to increase your power and give you new abilities. You defeat enemies and bosses, go deeper into the basement, and unlock items. You are meant to beat the game many times, as each time you unlock something new.
