The Shaw alphabet is a made-up way of writing English. It is named after George Bernard Shaw.

In his will, Shaw left money to be used to create a new alphabet. He was interested in making the English language easier to write. He wanted to write English the way it sounded.

After his death, a contest was held and designer Kingsley Read put together parts of the winning entries to make up the new alphabet.

The Shaw alphabet has 48 letters. 40 of the letters match one sound each in the English language. 8 more letters match a blend of two sounds.

Each letter in the Shaw alphabet has a name which shows how it sounds.

Tall and Deep letters are consonants.

Short letters are vowels.
