A fern is one of about 20,000 species of plant in the group Pteridophyta. The study of ferns is called pteridology; someone who studies ferns is called a pteridologist. A fern is a vascular plant, meaning it has specialised tissues for absorbing water.
Fern ecology change
Ferns grow in a wide range of habitats, and they often grow well in areas where flowering plants might now. Some ferns are also some of the worst weed species in the world.
