AQA is an awarding body. It is officially called AQA Education. It is active in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. It creates guidelines for subjects. It also holds exams for the subjects that it has guidelines for. It has courses for GCSE, AS and A Level subjects. It also does vocational qualifications. AQA is a registered charity. It is also not owned by the government.

It is not active in Scotland, which uses the Scottish Government-owned SQA instead.

History

AQA was made on 7 November 1997. When it was created it was an alliance between two exam boards (NEAB and AEB/SEG). The two boards officially merged on 1 April 2000. The City & Guilds vocational awarding body was also in the alliance but chose to not merge.
