Four (or more) groups claimed the attacks that day (Hamas: Al-Qassam Brigades, PIJ: Saraya Al-Quds, PFLP: Abu Ali Mustafa Brigades, and DFLP: National Resistance Brigades), see [[2023 Hamas-led attack on Israel]], and at least three different groups held hostages. “The time has come to draw the line, for the enemy to understand that time is up, and they can't keep going without consequences. We are announcing an operation called Al-Aqsa Floods. In the first part of it 5000 rockets have been fired. It is the time to unite, for all the Arab and Islamic powers to overthrow the Israeli occupation. Don't hurt the old and the young, but fight. This is the time to expel those occupying our land, and for them to pay the price for its crimes and murders. Controversies change

version as of ~ 02:18, 6 January 2024 (UTC)

In July 2019, Hamad urged members of the Palestinian diaspora to kill "Jews everywhere". His comments were characterized as incitement to genocide by Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting in America[1] and the Simon Wiesenthal Center.[2] His rhetoric was widely condemned by other Palestinians and he later stated that he supports the Hamas policy of "limiting its resistance to the Zionist occupation that usurps Palestine’s land and defiles its holy sites".[3][4]

Nationalism change

Hamas is, first and foremost, a Nationalist movement. << cite AJ>>Cite error: A <ref> tag is missing the closing </ref> (see the help page). Sunni Islam forms a core part of their. values, but, unlike more fanatical Sunni Islamist movements - such as Al-Qaeda or ISIS (so called "Islamic State") - Hamas do not aim for a trans national or global Islamic Calephate.[5][6] Hamas have violently clashed with ISIS and other Salsfists in Gaza and Syria. [source?]

Hamas have even violently clashed with Salsfist ISIS-sympathisers in Gaza, and

Hamas' goal is to lead a strong independent nation of Palestine,<<Dr. Levi>> with Al-Quds

Another unusual feature is that most of their allies are Shia or Marxist.

Two of the groups in this are Marxist, two were founded by Christians, and (as far as I can tell) the DFLP is currently led by a Catholic.

Not ISIS change

Kibbutz Sufa is where the IDF claim they found an ISIS flag among the possessions of a dead person who they claimed was a "Hamas terrorist". But Hamas are not ISIS and do not resemble them.

conservative not extreme change

Hamas follow a fairly mainstream conservative interpretation of Sunni Islam, which includes the acceptance of minority religions, particularly Palestinian Christians, as part of their nation.

Hamas themselves are religious conservatives but not "fundamentalist", e.g. fundamentalists consider musical instruments and artistic depictions of humans haram, whereas Hamas's anniversary rally in Gaza December 2022 looked and sounded like a Judas Priest gig (specifically the Nostradamus tour), with a variety of middle eastern and western style music and ten story high portrait of Yassin, on the past they've also plagiarised Bollywood music to make taunting video clips in broken Hebrew.

Dr. Levi West on "Understanding Hamas: From Tactics to Strategy" [1][2]
as it appeared in Modern War Institute podcast

The Hamas attacks against Israel on October 7 and the ongoing Israeli military campaign in Gaza are the latest, tragic chapters in a complex, decades-long conflict between Israel and a variety of actors—not only Hamas, but Hezbollah, Islamic Jihad, and others. By zooming out from the current events and looking expansively at that conflict, it is possible to identify a deeply important irregular warfare component—a component that shapes that conflict at all levels, from tactics to strategy.
To explore irregular warfare in that context, the Irregular Warfare Podcast is producing a special, three-part series of episodes. In the first, host Adam Darnley-Stuart speaks to renowned counterterrorism analyst Dr. Levi West about Hamas, its history, and its strategy. Dr. West offers nuanced insights into Hamas operations and the likelihood that the organization’s tactics might be adopted by other groups around the world. The discussion explores the effects of the October 7 attacks and Israel’s ongoing military response on the enduring friction between Israel and Iran, examines the broader impacts on the geopolitical environment, and more.
You can here that discussion in this special episode of the MWI Podcast. Be sure to subscribe to the Irregular Warfare Podcast on Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, TuneIn, Spotify, or your favorite podcast app to be sure you hear the second and third parts of this timely series.
