Early Life

Russell “Rusty” Martin grew up in a very rural area around Black Creek which ran through Grant Parish in Louisiana. This area had rolling hills of timber country. [3] He was the son of Mildred Edith Brooks and Travis Glenn Martin. His mother was a teacher retiring as a principal at George Town, Louisiana and his father was a pipe liner.

Martin went to school during the desegregation time period. As with many Southerners, change took a toll on his grades. [4] With only a few credits shy of graduating, Martin quit school and started working with his dad as an Oiler on a drag-line. He did all of the ground work for the operator, which was Russell’s father.

The most interesting and fun job was deep sea diving / commercial diving which was the job of the lead character in Martin’s first book, “Scars of My Guardian Angel”.[5]

In the span of a few years, his daughter Summer died, daughter Courtney was disabled with head trauma from a car wreck and his father lost a battle to cancer. In addition, he and his first wife went through a devastating divorce. These events turned Russell to God which became his guiding force for writing music and ultimately his first book of The Portal Series. Currently, the second book of The Portal Series “Bloodline of The Scrolls” is set to be released by early 2019.[6]
