Tirzepatide, sold under the brand name Mounjaro, is a medication used to treat type 2 diabetes and obesity.[1][2] It is used together with diet and exercise.[1] It is given by weekly injection under the skin.[1]
Common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, constipation, and abdominal pain.[1] Other side effects may include pancreatitis, low blood sugar, allergic reactions, and gallbladder disease.[1] Use in pregnancy may harm the baby.[1] It is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) receptor activator and increases insulin release with food.[1][3]
Tirzepatide was approved for medical use in the United States, Europe, and the United Kingdom in 2022.[1][3][4] In the United States it costs about 1,000 USD for 4 weeks as of 2022.[5]
