Smooth Collie ... British dog breed.[1]
The Smooth Collie is a breed of dog. It is a kind of herding dog. Smooth Collies are gentle and clever. They enjoy being with their owners.
History
changeSmooth Collies were first present in the early Victorian era.[2]
Smooth Collies are closely related to Rough Collies. These two kinds of dog have been bred together much. In some places (such as the United States), Smooth Collies and Rough Collies are thought to be only one breed. In other places (such as the United Kingdom) they are thought to be two different breeds.[3]
Appearance
changeSmooth Collies have long thin faces and short thick fur. They are a medium or large breed.
The fur on their paws, around their necks, and at the end of their tails is usually white. The rest of their fur may be yellow/brown, black with light brown markings, or "blue merle". Blue merle is like black with light brown markings, but the black is a broken pattern that looks grey or blue.
Compared to Smooth Collies in the United Kingdom, Smooth Collies in America may have fur that has more white and less colour. They are sometimes fluffier. They may have wider faces. They are often taller and heavier.[4][5]
Today
changeSmooth Collies are mostly show dogs and pets, not working dogs. They are sometimes used for herding, competitive obedience, or as service dogs.
Health
changeSmooth Collies do not have many health issues.
Some Smooth Collies may have an issue with their eyes. This is named "collie eye anomaly".[6]
Many Smooth Collies are affected by the MDR1 mutation. This mutation changes how they react to medication.[7]
