Valence and conduction bands

valence band and conduction band are the bands closest to the Fermi level and thus determine the electrical conductivity of the solid

The valence band and conduction band are a concept in physics. They do not mean anything when working with metal. In other solids, they are the last places before the fermi level.[1]
