Virgin and Child with Canon van der Paele

painting by Jan van Eyck

The Virgin and Child with Canon van der Paele is a large painting finished around 1434–1436 by Jan van Eyck. It shows Joris van der Paele, who was the donor portrait of the painting, with a number of saints.[1] The Virgin Mary is at the centre of the painting on a throne with Jesus Christ as a baby in her arms. The painting is set in a rounded church with the throne being where the altar would be.[2][3] Many people believe the painting to be one of van Eyck's best, with some calling it a "masterpiece of masterpieces".[4]
