Wendy Callender
Wendy Callander (born 11 June 1960) is a retired Australian Judoka athlete. She competed at the 1988 Summer Olympics, where women's judo was a demonstration sport, in the half-heavyweight event. Callander placed = 5th at the Games after bowing out of the quarterfinals against the eventual Gold Medallist, Ingrid Berghmans,[1] in the -72kg category.[2][3] Callander was a 6 time National Champion, 7 time Silver Medalist and 4 time Bronze Medalist at the Judo Australia National Championships between 1980 and 1994.[4] At the 1979 Oceania Judo Championships she won the bronze medal in the –66 kg and 15 years later in 1994 she won again the bronze medal in the -72 kg category.[5]
Shortly after retiring Internationally, Callander took up coaching and was Head Coach of Liverpool Catholic Judo Club for many years before officially retiring from the sport in 2011. Wendy has one daughter, Jade Callander (born 15 November 2000), who is a 5-time National Hockey Champion with Hockey NSW in the junior divisions and has been a national member of the Australian Junior Indoor Squads from the age of 17. In 2023 she represented Australia in Indoor Hockey with the Junior National Team in their United States Tour.
