The incumbent Labor government, led by Premier Kristina Keneally, tried to win a fifth consecutive term in government, but were defeated by the Liberal/National Coalition, led by Barry O'Farrell, in a landslide.

Labor won its lowest ever seat total, winning only 20 seats.[1]

In the Legislative Council, the Coalition won 11 seats (with a total of 19), Labor won five (with a total of 14), the Greens won three (with a total of five), the Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Party won one (with at total of two) and the Christian Democrats won one (with a total of two).
Notes
change- ↑ While Neville Wran also won 69 seats at the 1981 state election (the second "Wranslide" victory), the Legislative Assembly had 99 seats at the time, therefore he only held 69.7% of the chamber.
