Anna Mae Hays
United States Army general (1920–2018)
Anna Mae Virginia McCabe Hays (February 16, 1920 – January 7, 2018) was an American military personnel of World War II and the Korean War. She was born in Buffalo, New York.
Hays served as Chief of the U.S. Army Nurse Corps from 1967 through 1971. She was the first woman in the U.S. Armed Forces to be promoted to a general officer rank. In 1970, she was promoted to the rank of Brigadier General.[1] She received two Legion of Merit.
Hays died in Washington, D.C. on January 7, 2018 of complications from a heart attack at the age of 97.[1]
