Arrondissements of the Hautes-Pyrénées department

There are 3 arrondissements in the Hautes-Pyrénées department.[1] The French departments, and in other countries, are divided into arrondissements, which may be translated into English as districts (in some cases, as boroughs). The capital of an arrondissement is called a subprefecture.
If the prefecture (capital) of the department is in an arrondissement, that prefecture is the capital of the arrondissement, acting both as a prefecture and as a subprefecture.
Arrondissements are further divided into cantons and communes.

History
changeSince its creation, the Hautes-Pyrénées department has had few changes:[4]
- 1790 : creation of the department with five districts: Tarbes, Bagnères, Vic, la Montagne (Argelès), les Quatre Vallées (La Barthe de Neste)
- 1800 : creation of the arrondissements: Tarbes, Argelès-Gazost, Bagnères-de-Bigorre
- 1926 : the arrondissement of Argelès-Gazost is eliminated
- 1942 : restoration of the arrondissement of Argelès-Gazost
