History

Beginnings

In 1951, the new communist authorities of China began work on producing the first locally produced car.[2] As a result, Beijing Automobile Works was established in 1958 and began producing the Dongfanghong BJ760 limousine and started developing other, subsequent structures.[2] The beginning of the company's activity was an element of the broader policy of Great Leap Forward of the then leader of China Mao Zedong.[2] In the final period of his rule, structural transformations took place, As a result, the management of BAW was transferred to the local government of the capital Beijing.[2] For this purpose, the holding company "Beijing Automotive Industry Company" was established in 1973, thus initiating the use of the name "BAIC".[2] Over the next decade, the company focused on managing the production of commercial and specialized cars of the BAW brand mainly for the needs of the Chinese army until the early 1980s.[2]

Joint venture companies

Wanting to diversify its activities and increase its share in the civilian car sector, In May 1983, BAIC established the first joint-venture company in the history of the Chinese automotive industry.[2] Thus, in cooperation with American Motors Corporation, Beijing Jeep was created. In 2001, BAW gained greater autonomy as a separate enterprise managed by a separate management staff,[2] and a year later BAIC entered into another joint-venture company. Established in 2002 Beijing Hyundai in cooperation with the South Korean Hyundai was the first undertaking of this type after China's accession to the WTO.[3]

In 2005, Beijing Jeep ceased operations, instead, a new company Beijing Benz was established to locally produce Mercedes models for the Chinese market.[4] In 2007, a daughter company, Beijing Hainanchuan Automotive Parts Co. Ltd., was established, manufacturer of car parts. A year later, BAIC Hyundai produced the millionth Hyundai car.[5] In 2009, the total production of cars by companies belonging to the holding reached 6 million units.[6]

BAIC cars

In 2009, BAIC Group purchased the rights and technologies derived from the Saab 9-3 and 9-5,[7] preparing to start production of its own brand of cars. The company allocated approximately 10 billion yuan (approx. USD 1.5 billion) for this purpose.[8], creating a subsidiary BAIC Motor for conventionally powered cars and BAIC BJEV for electric vehicles.[4] In February 2012, the first BAIC E130 model debuted,[9] and in the same year the BAIC car brand gained an extended name - BAIC Senova. In the following years of the second decade of the 21st century, the focus was on the development of the offer, also creating other brands such as Weiwang and Huansu, as well as introducing Beijing off-road vehicles to the market.[10]

In 2018, the electric car division BAIC BJEV changed its name to BAIC BluePark, also introducing a new brand of technologically advanced designs Arcfox.[4] In 2019, the production of Beijing off-road vehicles was handled by a separate department Beijing Off-Road,[4] and in 2020, the BAIC Senova brand changed its name to Beijing Auto.[4] In the following years, expansion into foreign markets began, after Western Europe in 2019[11] in 2023, expanding the market reach also to the region of Central and Eastern Europe, including Poland.[12]

BAIC Motor (北京汽车) is the main subsidiary of BAIC Group, it is co-owned by BAIC Group and Beijing Municipal Government.[13] It currently operate the Beijing brand

BAIC BluePark New Energy Technology Co., Ltd.

BAIC BluePark (北汽蓝谷) is BAIC Group's subsidiary mainly engaged in the design, research and development and sales of electric automobiles. BAIC BluePark was restructured from its current subsidiary, Beijing Electric Vehicle Co., Ltd. (BAIC BJEV). The company currently operate the brands of Arcfox and EV models of Beijing brand.[14]

BAIC Group Off-road Vehicle Co., Ltd.

Beijing Off-road Vehicles (北京越野) used to be a department under BAIC Group, run by the fully owned subsidiary BAIC Group Off-road Vehicle Co., Ltd.[15]

In January 2020, BAIC announced the independence of Beijing Off-road brand.[16] The Beijing Off-road was independently operated, including development and sales channels, but shares the marque "BEIJING" with BAIC Motor (北京汽车) brand together. The current Beijing Off-road models badged in Chinese name "北京".

BAIC Foton Motor Co., Ltd

BAIC Foton (北汽福田), also known as Foton Motor or Foton, is a subsidiary of BAIC Group that designs and manufactures trucks, buses and sport utility vehicles .

BAIC has a wide product line that includes passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles, military vehicles and agricultural machinery and construction machinery.

The Beijing brand is the main passenger vehicle brand of BAIC, operated by multiple subsidiaries of BAIC Group according to different focus. They all share the same BEIJING badges and logos.

Arcfox

Arcfox (极狐汽车) is BAIC's premium EV brand operated by BAIC BluePark, established in 2017.

Beijing (北京汽车)

Beijing (北京汽车) is BAIC Motor's major brand, revived in 2020 after BAIC Group discontinued its Senova brand. All the former Senova vehicles were renamed to Beijing brand since then.[17] Beijing Motor will reorganize the product layout of its three major series in 2023. That is to say, it will focus on the main channel of SUVs, supplemented by sedans and crossovers, including multiple levels and multiple power sources.[18]

Beijing Off-road (北京越野)

Beijing Off-road (北京越野), operated by the fully owned subsidiary, the BAIC Group Off-road Vehicle Co., Ltd.,[16] The Beijing Off-road used to be a department of BAIC Motor, but later was acquired back into BAIC Group and independently operated since 2019. The Beijing Off-road models are badged as Chinese characters "北京"(Beijing).

BJEV/Beijing EV

With the Beijing Electric Vehicle Co., Ltd. (BAIC BJEV) was reconsolidated into BAIC BluePark, the battery electric vehicle of Beijing brand, like Beijing EU5, Beijing EU7, are also operated by BAIC BluePark at present.

Beiqi Foton Motor Co., Ltd. (Foton Motor) is a subsidiary of BAIC which designs and manufactures trucks, buses, sport utility vehicles, and agricultural machinery. It is headquartered in Changping, Beijing.[19]

Ruili is a sub-division of BAIC. They produce their vehicles under the Doda brand.[20]

Beijing Automobile Works Co., Ltd. (BAW) (北汽制造), which produces light off-road vehicles, trucks, and military vehicles, used to be a subsidiary of BAIC Group but was sold to private sector since 2015.[22][23]

Senova

The Beijing Light Automobile Company (BLAC), until 1988 the Beijing Automobile Factory No. 2, started in the late 1960s when production of the independently developed BJ130 began. Its introduction was slowed considerably by the upheavals of the Cultural revolution.[24] In 1984, assembly of the Isuzu Elf/NHR began (originally as the BJ136, later as the BJ1030/1040/1050 series). In 1988, a new plant for these trucks was built with aid from the Japanese, and petrol and diesel light truck engines were also produced.[25] BLAC went bankrupt in 2002.[24]

Like many other peers, BAIC has several joint ventures with foreign automakers—including two with Daimler AG.[26]

Beijing Hyundai Motor Co., Ltd. is an automobile manufacturing company headquartered in Beijing, China, and is a 50:50 joint-venture between BAIC Motor and Hyundai Motor Company.

Beijing Foton Daimler Automobile Co., Ltd. is a joint venture between Daimler and a BAIC subsidiary, Foton Motor, which makes commercial trucks.[27]

Huansu is a brand under Beiqi Yinxiang Automobile, a joint venture between Beijing Auto (Beiqi) and the Yinxiang Group from Chongqing.

Beijing Jeep Corporation became China's first Sino-western automotive joint venture when it was established in 1984 with American Motors Corporation. Beijing Jeep subsequently became Beijing Benz-DaimlerChrysler Automotive Co Ltd and then Beijing Benz Automotive Co Ltd.
