It had a population of 43,867 at the 2001 census, though this figure has increased greatly in recent years.[1] Banbury is part of the Cherwell district. The Member of Parliament for Banbury is Victoria Prentis. Banbury played an important part in the English Civil War prior to the Battle of Edge Hill, as shown by The Reindeer inn[2] (December 2005).

Heavy clay and Ironstone deposits surround Banbury.[3]
