The team originally played as the Bridgeport Sound Tigers from 2001 until 2021. The team's name was a reference to the Long Island Sound. During their first season, the Sound Tigers were able to win the Macgregor Kilpatrick Trophy as the regular season champions. They would make it to the Calder Cup finals but would be defeated by the Chicago Wolves four games to one.[1]
On May 10, 2021, the team announced that they were going to rebrand themselves and change their name to the Bridgeport Islanders.[2]
