Broken Hill

town in New South Wales, Australia

Broken Hill is a mining town in the center of Australia. It is located 1,143 kilometres (710 mi) west of Sydney, whilst Adelaide is 511 kilometres (318 mi) to the southwest. About 17,500 people live in Broken Hill. There was a short gold rush, in 1848. No gold was found, and there was very little water. Later silver was found in the area around the town and some mines around Broken Hill still operate. There are passenger trains to and from Sydney and buses to and from Dubbo.
