On the alien planet of Cybertron, the Autobots and Decepticons are at war. The Autobots are losing and their leader Optimus Prime has decided they must leave but the Decepticons fight to stop them. There is a big battle but Autobot B-127 is able to escape and is sent to another planet, to try and set up a new base on for them on Earth.

In 1987, Autobot B-127 crashes in California and is chased by by Sector 7, a secret government group that looks out for aliens on Earth. B-127 sees an army jeep and transforms to look the same and tries to drive away but a Decepticon called Blitzwing fights him and hurts him. B-127 does not say where Optimus Prime is hiding so Blitzwing hurts his neck leaving him unable to speak again. B-127 uses one of Blitzwings own bombs to kill him. Badly injured B-127 tries to hide from the Sector 7 people, he sees a nearby old yellow car, a Volkswagen Beetle, before he falls down from his injuries.

Later, there is a girl called Charlie Watson, who is sad after her father died and upset that her mother Sally has a new boyfriend. Charlie finds a rusty old Volkswagen Beetle in a local scrapyard, the owner of the scrapyard is her friend and gives her the car as an 18th-birthday present. While trying to fix the car Charlie turns on homing signal by accident and two more Decepticons follow the signal to Earth. The Decepticons pretend to be peaceful and ask Sector 7 to help them find the missing Autobot.

There is a nest of bumblebees underneath the car. As Charlie attempts to fix the Beetle, it transforms into the robot B-127. They become friends and she names him "Bumblebee". She then unlocks a message from Optimus Prime asking Bumblebee to defend Earth, which helps him to remember. Charlie's neighbor Memo, finds them but agrees to keep Bumblebee secret. Bumblebee learns to use his radio to speak by playing short pieces of music and songs. Charlie leaves Bumblebee alone one day but he breaks many things and the house and causes an energy spike. Charlies mom blames her for the damaged house. Sally blames Charlie for the havoc, Charlie gets upset and says she is still sad about her father's death. She drives away with with Bumblebee and Memo, but Sector 7 and the Decepticons show up and take Bumblebee prisoner. Charlie and Memo are sent home.

Charlie and Memo sneak out and Sector 7 back to their base and find Bumblebee. The Decepticons hurt Bumblebee for more information, and find a message from Optimus Prime saying the Autobots are coming to Earth. The Decepticons kill Bumblebee and one of the Sector 7 scientists, but now Sector 7 knows they are not peaceful.

Charlie uses high power electric shocks to bring Bumblebee back to life. They hide from Sector 7 and chase after the Decepticons, who are in a shipyard building on top of a radio tower so they can send a message back to Cybertron. They shoot down a Sector 7 helicopter but Bumblebee saves the people on before it crashes. Bumblebee fights one Decepticon and breaks him to pieces using a chain. Charlie climbs up the radio tower to stop the Decepticon message, and the Decepticon chases her. Bumblebee destroys a wall, which releases water and knocks over a huge ship which crushes and destroys the Deception. Bumblebee and Charlie leave, the Sector 7 people they helped earlier allow them to escape. On a cliff near the Golden Gate Bridge, Charlie says goodbye to Bumblebee because she knows he has an important mission to do. Bumblebee changes into a beautiful sports car, a 1977 Chevrolet Camaro, and drives away. Charlie goes home to her family and her friend Memo.

Bumblebee meets with Optimus Prime who has escaped Cyberton and come to Earth. He thanks Bumblebee and they watch as more Autobots arrive. Meanwhile, Charlie finishes repairing the old car she had been working on with her father, a Chevy Corvette and goes out for a drive.
