Candlemas
Candlemas, also known as the Feast of the Presentation of Jesus Christ and the Feast of the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is a Christian feast day commemorating the presentation of Jesus at the Temple by Joseph and Mary. It is based upon the Gospel of Luke 2:22–39. At the time of Jesus it was expected that the offering of the firstborn and the purification of the mother would take place at the same time 40 days after the birth, as Mary and Joseph did in accordance with what is narrated in the Gospel of Luke.[1] In connection with this event is celebrated the feast of February 2, which falls 40 days after Christmas. Candles, symbol of Christ "light to reveal God to the nations", [2]are blessed on this day.
Many Christians practice the tradition of keeping out the Nativity creche or other Christmas decorations until this feast day.
Many people celebrate this holiday by eating crepes and tamales.
The event celebrated on this day is part of the Joyful Mysteries of the Holy Rosary.
