Chad Chronister

American law enforcement officer (born 1964)

Chad Chronister (born February 2, 1968) is an American law enforcement officer and politician. He has been the sheriff of Hillsborough County, Florida since 2017.

In November 2024, President-elect Donald Trump named Chronister as his nominee for Administrator of the Drug Enforcement Administration.[1] However a few days later, Chronister withdrew his name from consideration.

Sheriff of Hillsborough County

Chronister began working in the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office in 1992. He was a patrol deputy and SWAT operator. He then became a detective for several units. He then became deputy commander of the Community Outreach Division, and later the colonel of the Department of Operation Support.[2]

In 2017, he became sheriff of Hillsborough County and won a special election in 2018 to serve out the rest of the term.[3] He was re-elected in 2020.[4]

Administrator of the DEA

On November 30, 2024, President-elect Donald Trump named Chronister as his nominee for Administrator of the Drug Enforcement Administration for his second administration.[1] He withdrew himself from consideration on December 3, 2024.[5]

Personal life

Chronister graduated from Saint Leo University, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in criminal justice and a Master of Science in criminology.[1]

Chronister married Nicole DeBartolo in 2010. Chronister's son, George, was arrested in 2017 for stabbing another man in the face. He was sentenced to 22 months in prison and 3 years probation to follow his release.[6][7][8] Governor Ron DeSantis ended his probation in April 2022. [9]
