Cornel Țăranu

Romanien composer and conductor (1934–2023)

Cornel Țăranu (20 June 1934 – 18 June 2023) was a Romanian composer, musicologist, conductor and cultural manager. After studies in Cluj and Paris, he began a long career as a teacher at the Cluj Conservatoire, founded a chamber orchestra dedicated to contemporary music, directed a festival, and was head of the Union of Romnian Composers for more than two decades. His compositions focus on orchestral compositions; he wrote two operas, film scores, chamber music, and vocal music for soloists and choirs. He also completed unfinished scores by George Enescu. He died on 18 June 2023, two days before his 89th birthday.
