changeMercury was born on July 28, 1965,[2] in Salvador, Bahia.[3] Her mother is Liliana Mercuri, a social worker[4] of Italian descent.[5] Her father is António Fernando de Abreu Ferreira de Almeida, a Portuguese-born[5] industrial mechanic.[4] Her four siblings include Tom, Cristiana, Vânia, and Marcos.[2][5] She attended both the Ana Néri School and the Colégio Baiano.
When Mercury was eight years old, she began taking dance lessons,.[5][6] At age 13, influenced by Elis Regina, she decided to become a singer.[5] She started singing in local bars in 1980.[5] Mercury went to the Universidade Federal da Bahia, where she enrolled in the Dance School in 1984.[5] A year later she married electronic engineer Zalther Póvoas.[7] She has two children in this marriage, Gabriel Almeida Póvoas.[5] and Giovana Almeida Póvoas born in 1985 and 1986 respectively.[5]
