Gil Santos

American sports announcer (1938–2018)

Gil Santos (born April 19, 1940 – April 19, 2018) was a longtime sportscaster and was the voice of the New England Patriots. He was paired with Gino Cappeletti for every season except the 2001 season when he was hospitalized badly due to illness and replaced by Pete Brock for the first eight games. Capalleti would retire after the 2011 NFL season and was replaced by Scott Zolak as color commentator. He also called games for the Boston Celtics, Boston College Eagles football, Providence Friars basketball, Portland Breakers, and Penn State Nittany Lions football. On April of 2012, Santos was hospitalized with pneumonia and was briefly hospitalized. He was questioned if he was able to continue as Patriots play-by-play. Gil Santos announced that the 2012 would be his final season as the "Voice of the Patriots". After the 2012 season, Santos retired due to health issues.
