Helmut Oberlander

Nazi war criminal, who fought Canadian government efforts to strip him of his Canadian citizenship and deportation to Germany (1924–2021)

Helmut Oberlander (15 February 1924 – 20 September 2021) was a Ukrainian-born Canadian citizen who was a member of the Einsatzgruppen death squads of Nazi Germany in the occupied Soviet Union during World War II. Oberlander was on the Simon Wiesenthal Center's list of most wanted Nazi war criminals.[1][2]

Beginning in 1994, the Government of Canada made repeated attempts to revoke Oberlander's citizenship.

In July 2017 the Government of Canada used an Order in Council to strip Oberlander of his Canadian citizenship for the fourth time.[3][4]

Oberlander died at his home in Waterloo, Ontario on 20 September 2021, at the age of 97.[5]
