Hiwi Tauroa

New Zealand rugby union player (1927-2018)

Edward Te Rangihiwinui "Hiwi" Tauroa (1927 – 11 December 2018)[1] was a Māori rugby union player, school principal, and civil servant. He was born in Hawera, New Zealand. He was the principal of Wesley College from 1968, before becoming the principal of Tuakau College in 1974.

Tauroa was originally best known for his rugby career, and played for the New Zealand national rugby union team, the "All Blacks," from 1951 to 1954. He became coach of the Counties Rugby Union in the 1970s.[2]

In 1979, he was appointed New Zealand's Race Relations Commissioner. He also was chairman of Te Māngai Pāho and the New Zealand Sports Foundation. Tauroa was made a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George in 1994.

Taurua died on 11 December 2018 in Hokianga, New Zealand aged 91.[1]
