Ifigenia Martínez y Hernández

Mexican economist, diplomat and politician (1925–2024)

Ifigenia Martha Martínez y Hernández (16 June 1925 – 5 October 2024) was a Mexican economist and politician. She was the president of the Chamber of Deputies from 1 September 2024 until her death on 5 October 2024. She was a member of the National Regeneration Movement, however was also a member of the Party of the Democratic Revolution and Institutional Revolutionary Party before.

Martínez y Hernández was a member of the Chamber of Deputies for a few months in 2024. She was in the chamber before from 2009 to 2012, from 1994 to 1997 and from 1976 to 1979. She was a member of the Senate from 1988 to 1991 and from 2018 until 2024.

Martínez y Hernández was born in Mexico City. She studied at the National Autonomous University of Mexico and at Harvard University. In 1989, she co-founded the Party of the Democratic Revolution.

On 1 October 2024, Martínez y Hernández presided the inauguration of Claudia Sheinbaum as President of Mexico, handing the presidential sash to her.[1]

Martínez y Hernández died on 5 October 2024 in Mexico City at the age of 99.[2][3]
