The Israel Prison Service (IPS, Hebrew: שב"ס شيروت بتي هسوهر ; English: IPS ) was established in 1949 and is part of the Israeli Ministry of the Interior. It is the executive branch of law enforcement in Israel. Its headquarters are in the city of Ramla in central Israel and it is responsible for 32 prisons spread across Israel, housing 35,000 prisoners and 8,000 employees. In 2009, the percentage of security prisoners (Palestinian prisoners) was 40% and the percentage of criminal prisoners was 60%.[1][2][3][4][5][6]
