J. L. Austin
English philosopher
John Langshaw "J. L." Austin (26 March 1911 – 8 February 1960) was a British philosopher of language. He was born in Lancaster, Lancashire. He supported ordinary language philosophy. He developed the theory of speech acts.[1] He worked at Oxford University.
He was awarded Order of the British Empire for his services during World War II.[2]
Austin died of lung cancer in Oxford on 8 February 1960 at the age of 48.
