Janet Gray Hayes

American mayor

Janet Gray Hayes (née Frazee; July 12, 1926 – April 21, 2014) was an American politician. She was the Mayor of San Jose, California from 1975 until 1983. She was both the first woman to be elected as the Mayor of San Jose, and the first woman elected mayor of any major city in the United States. She was born in Rushville, Indiana.

Hayes died from a stroke on April 21, 2014 in Saratoga, California. She was 87.[1]
