Kazimierz Nycz

Catholic cardinal, Archbishop of Warsaw

Kazimierz Nycz (born 1 February 1950)[1] is a Polish cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. He has been the Archbishop of Warsaw since 2007.

Early life and education

Kazimierz Nycz was born in Stara Wieś, Poland. He was ordained a priest on 20 May 1973 by Bishop Julian Groblicki. He studied at the Pontifical University of John Paul II in Kraków and later obtained a doctorate.[1][2]

Ecclesiastical career

Nycz was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Kraków in 1988 and was consecrated by Cardinal Franciszek Macharski. In 2004, he became the Bishop of Koszalin-Kołobrzeg. In 2007, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him as the Archbishop of Warsaw, succeeding Stanisław Wielgus.[1][2]

Cardinalate

On 20 November 2010, Nycz was created a cardinal by Pope Benedict XVI. He was assigned the titular church of Ss. Silvestro e Martino ai Monti.[2]
