Lateral consonant

l-like consonant in which the airstream proceeds along the sides of the tongue, but it is blocked by the tongue from going through the middle of the mouth

A lateral consonant is a sound where air flows out of the side of the mouth. English has one lateral, [l]. Languages have been found with lateral approximants, fricatives, affricates and flaps. Lateral trills are possible but no language has one.
