Michel Jouvet

French neurobiologist (1925-2017)

Michel Valentin Marcel Jouvet (16 November 1925 – 3 October 2017) was a French neurobiologist and oneirologist. He was Emeritus Professor of Experimental Medicine at the University of Lyon. He was born in Lons-le-Saunier, Jura, France. Jouvet was the researcher who first developed the analeptic drug Modafinil. He was elected in 1977 to the French Academy of Sciences. He developed the idea and term of REM sleep.

He was elected a member of the Academia Europaea in 1993.[1]

Jouvet died in Lyon, France on 3 October 2017 at the age of 91.[2]
