History
changeThe district was formed in 1994 by joining the two previous districts Marienberg and Zschopau.
Geography
changeThe district is located in the Erzgebirge mountains. The highest point is the 891 m (2,923 ft) high Hirtstein. The lowest point, 305 m (1,001 ft), is in Witzschdorf. 40% of the district is covered by forests.
