In December 2022, Mohamed Bazoum was appointed current president of the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA), during the 23rd ordinary summit of heads of state and government of the organization in Abidjan.[4]

On 26 July 2023, soldiers of the Presidential Guard removed Bazoum from power and arrested him.[5] When his removal was announce, Colonel-Major[6] Amadou Abdramane went on state television to claim that the President had been removed from power[7][8] and was being replaced by a military junta calling itself the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland.[9] On August 13, 2023, the government of Niger announced that it wanted to "prosecute before the competent national and international authorities Mohamed Bazoum and his local and foreign accomplices, for high treason and undermining the internal and external security of Niger".[10] On November 30, 2023, Mohamed Bazoum's family claimed that they had no longer been in contact with him since October 18, 2023, and denounced "abusive arrests and searches" targeting some of them.[10]

In June 2024, the Supreme Court of Niger lifted the immunity of Mohamed Bazoum, accused of high treason, an offense punishable by death in Niger, and other alleged offenses. Mohamed Bazoum refused to sign his resignation and remained imprisoned with his wife by the Nigerien junta, in his presidential residence.[11]
