Patrick Lee Cosquer is an American squash coach and former player.[1][2]
Early life and education
changeHe graduated from Bates College in 1997 with a bachelor's degree in sociology.[3] While at Bates, he stood out on the squash team, accumulating a 60-22 individual record and serving as team captain and MVP in his senior year.[4] He also played on the college's baseball team.[5]
Coaching career
changeEarly coaching roles
changeAfter graduating, Cosquer began his coaching career at various levels, gaining experience in different settings.[2] He served as the head coach at Northwestern University during the 1998-99 season, leading the Wildcats to a Chaffee Trophy (E Division) Championship.[6] He also held assistant coaching positions at Portsmouth Abbey School and Newport Squash Club, as well as being an assistant squash professional at The Chatham Club.[7]
StreetSquash
changeBefore joining Bates, Cosquer was the Director of Squash Programs and Community Service at StreetSquash, an after-school enrichment program in Harlem, New York.[8] He coached several national champions and helped raise his teams' academic performance there. [9]
Bates College
changeCosquer returned to his alma mater in 2008 as the head coach of the Bates men's and women's squash teams, where he remained for 11 years.[8] During his tenure, he amassed a combined record of 309-200 and coached eight All-Americans, a two-time College Squash Association Individual Champion, five New England Small College Athletic Conference Players of the Year, and 51 All-NESCAC performers.[10] Under his coaching, the Bates men's team won the Summers Cup in 2016, and the women's team won the Walker Cup three times (2016, 2018, 2019). He was also named NESCAC Coach of the Year three times.[11]
Hobart and William Smith Colleges
changeIn 2019, Cosquer was appointed head coach of the Hobart and William Smith squash teams.[7] In his first season, he led Hobart to a 7-13 record and William Smith to a 16-5 record. Under his leadership, the Herons won the Liberty League tournament title.[1]
Controversies
changeCosquer's departure from Bates College in 2019 was marked by allegations of racial discrimination.[12] He filed a human rights complaint with the Maine Human Rights Commission, citing a toxic work environment and discrimination.[13]
