Personal Jesus
"Personal Jesus" is a 1984 song by British band Depeche Mode. It is the leading single from their seventh studio album Violator. It went to number 13 in the United Kingdom, number 28 in the United States, number 27 in France, number 44 in Canada, number 5 in Switzerland and Germany, number 17 in Sweden, number 14 in New Zealand, number 7 in Ireland and number 3 in Spain and Italy. It was covered by Johnny Cash and Marilyn Manson.

Given that, by now. Depeche Mode had become a stadium phenomenon in the States. Violator seemed an oddly introspective way to sell six million units (the synth-rock single "Personal Jesus" was the exception to the rule).
