Shimizu-ku (清水区, Shimizu-ku) is one of three wards of the city of Shizuoka.
The municipality was "Shimizu City" until it merged with Shizuoka in 2005.[1]
History
changeShimizu developed around its good natural harbor.[1]
In the Edo period, Kanbara (蒲原, Kanbara-juku), Yui (由井, Yui-shuku), Okitsu (興津, Okitsu-juku) and Ejiri (江尻, Ejiri-juku) were the 15-18th of the 53 shogunate-maintained waystations (shuku-eki) along the Tōkaidō road which connected Edo and Kyoto. These four way-stations were in the area of modern Shimizu.[2]
Geography
changeShimizu is located on the coast of Suruga Bay of the Pacific Ocean.[1]
