SuperMarioLogan

American satirical adult-puppetry webseries (2007-2021; 2021-)

SuperMarioLogan (Currently shortened to SML) is a situation comedy web series created by Logan Thirtyacre that is shown on YouTube. The channel was created in December 2007, and has since become one of the most popular YouTube web series. The series is targeted towards a mature audience with episodes containing pop-culture references, satirical and often edgy humor, uses of profanity, violence and sexually suggestive jokes or themes.

The series centers on a group of characters living their daily lives in a suburban town in Florida. Characters include Marvin, Jeffy, Rose, Junior, Joseph, Cody, Brooklyn T. Guy, and Chef Pee Pee. Originally, most characters were represented with plushies from the Super Mario franchise, including plushies of Mario, Rosalina, a black Yoshi, Bowser, Bowser Junior, a Koopa Troopa and a Magikoopa, but following a cease-and-desist letter from Nintendo in 2021, the series has fully replaced these Nintendo-owned characters with their own originally designed puppets, and were given new names (for example, Mario became Marvin).

Logan Thirtyacre collaborates with several friends and family members to create the videos, including his brother Lance Thirtyacre, who voices several characters, and his girlfriend (Chilly Jimenez) The team behind SML has also produced merchandise and other media related to the channel, further expanding its reach and influence.[1][2]

Controversy

change

In December 2017, British news outlet The Sun reported that a 7 year old boy attempted to construct a noose out of Christmas decorations to hang around his neck. The mother blamed the SuperMarioLogan YouTube series for the incident, for one video which her son saw that showed Jeffy tying a noose around his neck. The Sun also criticized SuperMarioLogan for its use of kid-friendly Super Mario characters in videos that aren't appropriate for children. SuperMarioLogan's creator Logan Thirtyacre apologized for the incident, stating that his videos are for entertainment only and aren't to me imitated in real life.[3]

After the controversy, newer videos on SuperMarioLogan have rarely, if ever referenced self-harm topics. The video which caused the controversy (titled "SML Short: Jeffy's Tantrum!") was also later deleted from the YouTube channel.

Controversy ensued when SuperMarioLogan was featured on ABC's Good Morning America segment titled "What parents should know about inappropriate content on YouTube" in May 2018, highlighting many YouTube creators that may not be suitable for children. In one portion of the segment, ABC interviewed a few kids aged 13 and under and found that many of them were frequent viewers of SuperMarioLogan. This raised some questions, after ABC found that many SuperMarioLogan videos include mature themes, such as curse words, violence, racial stereotypes and sexual humor. ABC cited a (now-deleted) review by Common Sense Media, concluding that the series was not appropriate for viewers under 17. Logan Thirtyacre made a statement to ABC, stating that his content is in fact not made with children as the main audience, and that it is the responsibility of supervising parents to determine what content is and isn't suitable for their child. [4]

Although most of the controversy wasn't directed at SuperMarioLogan itself, the "Doofy the Dragon" segments seen in some videos gained controversy among many Latin American parents in November of 2024 after clips of the segments were reuploaded by other users and appeared on YouTube Kids. The segments gained controversy due to the extremely violent nature of them, with each segment ending with the titular dragon dying in some way. Many parents were concerned that this content was intentionally malicious and was meant to manipulate the mind of a child, comparing it to Elsagate. Many sources reporting on the controversy erroneously described Doofy the Dragon as its own YouTube channel, not even acknowledging SuperMarioLogan as its source. It should also be noted that SuperMarioLogan no longer features the Doofy the Dragon segments, as the series now heavily avoids self-harm references due to a previous controversy. [5] [6]
