The song was able to make it to #1 on the Adult Top 40, #2 on the Adult Contemporary, #7 on the Adult Alternative Airplay, #14 on the Billboard Hot 100,and #15 on the Mainstream Top 40 charts.[1][2][3][4][5] The song was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).[6]
The song is sung from the point of view of the superhero Superman. In the song, Superman says that even though he is loved for being a hero, it isn't easy being him.
A music video for the song was released. In the video, Five for Fighting sings in different locations. Playing the piano in an apartment, singing on the streets and on a cliffside, in the back of a car, at a party, and in the woods. Throughout the video, a couple is also shown. At the end of the video, he lies down in a bed with a woman and a baby.
