It's worth reminding our younger readers that "ships of the line" referred to wooden ships driven by sails, whereas "battleships" were made of iron (steel) and were driven by coal until the mid-twentieth century. Battleships no longer exist, but their controlling function in large-scale actions has been adopted by aircraft carriers. Probably the largest offensive weapons are carried by atomic submarines.
